“Our projects don't have to start and end in Cinema 4D, After Effects, or Premiere. When we begin to see these softwares as tools alone, it gives us a chance to experiment, play, and find something original.”

Doug Alberts

What’s covered in this Workshop?

01

Conceptual development

Here we dive deep into the process of creating this film. From storyboards to motion tests, we take a look at all the development and process material that ultimately led to the final film.

02

Designing for 3D and the mixed-media approach

Design is always hard. Designing for 3D, while using photography and analog elements, is even harder. In this video, take a peek at how the style used in this film was achieved.

03

Exploring lighting, materials, and rendering

In this video, we focus on how to turn the early developmental material into fully realized 3D assets. Here, we dive deep into the texturing, lighting, and rendering used to create this look.

04

Creating stylized movement

This video focuses on creating stylized movement and the crafty stop-motion vibe used in this film. We’ll look at the rigging, keyframes, and animation curves employed throughout.

05

Bringing it all together in the final comp

Here we'll explore clay, high-res photos/scans, and 3D renders. We’ll focus on the composite and how all these disparate elements came together to create the final film.

The project

Bugged is a beautiful mixed media short film created in 2019 by Doug Alberts. Inspired by stop-motion, claymation, and all things practical, this film documents the wild unexpected events of this bug-filled world.

The artist

Doug is a twin from Chicago who loves all things animation. He’s currently working as a director, designer, and animator. When not working on his next passion project you can find him relaxing in a hammock, fishing, or out on a run.

Project files and assets

In addition to the video walkthroughs, this Workshop includes various project files that were used directly in the production of these films. From initial mood boards and storyboards, down to production project files.

Video walkthroughs

Not only will you be able to directly interact with many of the project files used in the making of this film; you’ll also be able to follow along with in-depth video walkthroughs from the artists themselves.

Where will I be able to access my workshop?

You will be able to access your workshop through your School of Motion user dashboard. You must have an account and be logged in to access the workshop.

How is this different than a School of Motion Course?

Holdframe Workshops are deep-dives into specific projects done by an artist, studio, or collective. Rather than focus on broad fundamentals, they allow for a peek behind the curtain to see how some of the best work in the industry gets made. They are much shorter than School of Motion courses and are available to watch instantly after enrollment. Workshops do not have teaching-assistants, homework, or student groups like our courses do.

What is your refund policy?

For instant access courses, students can request a refund within the first 30 days from their point of purchase.
